Formula 3 1985 to 1987
1983
I competed in Racing Displays British Formula Ford 2000 Championship sponsored
by 'Penistone Hardmetals' of Sheffield, driving a Reynard SF83 also supported by
the Reynard works, and won the first three races. At Cadwell Park unfortunately
an accident occurred on the first corner of
the race, in whlch I broke my wrist. I continued to race in the Championship
with my wrist in plaster for the next three races. Reynard had not been
successful for the last three seasons, but after my early successes everyone now
every following suit and buying Reynard cars.I competed in twenty five races
throughout the season and won a total of fourteen races from fourteen pole
positions, with four new lap records and eleven fastest laps!
I won the
championship by a clear eighty one points.

'I visited Tim at the Penistone team base in Sheffield and
saw several of Tims' race during 1983 and he was completely
dominant & had obviously built up an excellent relationship with
Adrian Reynard, who was just on the verge of establishing
himself as one of Britain's best young designers. (Left Adrian

Davies & Reynard SF83 review
At the time I was feeding articles to the Western Mail
newspaper and BBC Radio Wales and after Tim became the first
Welsh driver to win a British title for over 25 years, he went
on tobe 3rd
in 1983 Welsh Sports Personality of the Year, which
was sponsored by the Western Mail & BBC Wales.'

1984
After winning the 1983 British FF2000 championship I had intended
competing in F3 in 1984, but unfortunately I was unable to secure
sponsorship, However, 'Swallow Racing' offered me a few races in
their Reynard FF2000 car. 'Swallow Racing was run by Tim Stakes who was boss of
Rugby Finance and I visited Tim at the Swallow teams Leicestershire base and saw him lay
his bogy at Donington. He really enjoyed racing in Denmark (well any man would
in the '80s).
However he was
robbed of a win at Zandvoort after his car was hit by Sandro Sala at Tarzan.
Sala later revealed that he had put
grease on the side-walls of his tyres in case he made contact with another car!
Tim bounced back by winning at Thruxton on the way back home!
He competed in fourteen races in Europe
and Britain, and won five races and took three seconds places. 'My five wins in 1984 were
Jyllandstring in Denmark, Donington, Snetterton twice and
Thruxton.
Due to these successes 'Swallow Racing' confirmed that they
would sponsor me for a full season in the 1985 Marlboro British
F3 championship'. The team will be running the new Reynard F3
car with three new Volkswagen engines.'
