Final race in the
2015 Welsh Championship results in a points tie!
Pembrey Sunday October 11th - Autumn Truck-Fest
Race 2 – a Great way to end
the season!
As is usual, the grid for race 2 was made from the
finishing order of race 1. Due to the terminal problems afflicting Martin Davies
& Andy Williams’ cars there were only 28 starters for race 2. Only 28? More like
20 and plenty! Actually the finishing order of race one meant that Peter Hills &
Colin Dunn would be starting at the back. Peter was a little worried that he may
not be able to get very far, but more of that later,
The Race – Rolling Start – 15
minutes plus 1 lap
The programme had our second race scheduled for a
4.45 pm start. However it was plain there was going to be a delay, when of
the Trucks went in hard, and demolished one of the barriers at the end of the
Hatchets escape road! The driver was able to hop out, but the truck ended up
embedded in the banking behind the barrier, so it was going to take some time to
extract and repair the barrier. (Check out the photos on the Pembrey Marshals
Facebook page). In the end our race started at 5.22 pm after the 15 lap
Pick-up Truck race. This time it wasn’t a problem as there was plenty of time
left, this time!
At the lights it was Dave Krayem who took the lead ,
but with Keith White in hot pursuit! Keith took the lead on lap 4 as the leaders
came up to start to do some lapping, and started to pull away, but more of that
later. Keith Butcher was 3rd, followed by a fast starting
Damian Longatano, Fabio and Neil Watts. Ben Scrivens had a slow getaway,
dropping from 4th to 7th. Neil worked his way past Fabio
and Damian, and late on began to apply some real pressure to Keith and his
Nissan Primera. Things started to get complicated as they began to lap the
back-markers, and then despite a half-spin Ben, made in-roads during the last
laps and passed Fabio and Damian, to finish 5th , but 4th
place Neil Watts was too far ahead! Fabio was 6th and Damian was 7th.
Actually it’s been a hard road for Damian and his dad, in their first complete
year in racing, and he must have been a bit pleased to at last see the guy who
was waving the chequered flag, but hopefully it will be a sight to which he
becomes very familiar! Damian was the last finisher on the same lap as the
leaders. One lap down, Ian Fraser & Dave Scaramanga & Ken James were amongst
those harrying Phil Hanson and the huge Audi R8 Ultra! The awesome Audi would
eventually find its way past to finish 8th chased by Glynne & his
BMW, and Mark Harris (Honda)!
Late on, Ian and Ken James both retired, following Tyrone Lufferelli as the only non-finishers! Meanwhile, early doors, Giles, Chris & Roger were having a ding-dong, but all the while Peter Hills was charging up through the field, and he was up to 16th by lap 3, passing Chris Morris on the way! Dave Scaramanga was falling back and was passed by Peters flying Mini too! Sam Sumerhayes was having an early dice with Josh Wright and Mark Harries, but Sam and Josh were the next cars on Peter Hills list, and his climb from last to 11th won him the ‘Driver of the Race’ award. (The Driver of the Race’ award is judged by the Marshals on Post 3, and no doubt they were only too happy to give it to one of their own, after such a stellar drive!) Talking of those who came from the back, Nick Rocke, whose crash in practice was the cause of the practice red flag, dropped right to the back, but made a come-back to win Class BT and finish 16th.
In 17th place it was Chris Morris. Chris was playing his joker and was in a happy place, thanks to Peter Hills DNF in race 1, and had no need to race hard, and was stroking it home to pick up the points he needed to extend the Class AS winning margin.
Giles Beck meanwhile was falling back toward his
fellow Pembroke Dock racer, Willem Verhaak. Giles finished in 18th
place & Willeem was 19th. Huw Morgan (20th), Susanne
Jones (21st) & Colin Dunn (22nd) finished nose to tail.
Also tied together were Andrew Williams and his MG ZA, Alan Smith (Ford KA) and
Graham Welch who was the final finisher.
So the race, and with it the 2015 season, began to wind -down.
Late in the race Dave Krayem had a half spin, which
allowed Keith White some respite, but Dave got going again and in the final
laps, Keith began to slow with a rough sounding engine, but he managed to make
it to the end, to claim enough points to make it a tie with Sam Summerhayes for
the overall championship!
All that remains is the WSSCC Conference and Awards Night at the Miskin Manor on Saturday 7th November.
