Karl, from Lampter was a friend of Tim Davies, and did some early team work for Tim. Later he moved to Brands Hatch and competed in the Dunlop Star of Tomorrow, finishing 3rd only 3 points behind the title winner Phil Kempe! Karl later moved into Saloons and won the Ford Escort RS Turbo Championship (see page 2 of the pdf) . Karl did a thank you session at Pembrey for family and freinds! He showed he was a quick driver, commenting to me in the middle of Senna that 'There's not much grip in these tyres!' I replied that I thought they were doing their best,
considering the extreme stress he was putting them through!
He later entered the BTCC with an ex-rally Ford Sierra Cosworth run by Asquith Racing.
Gareth Rees' family were orginally from Cardiff, although his parents moved to Bath. His father provided support via his 'Autobulk' business and Gareth won the Marlboro Masters F3 race at Zandvoort which gave him a few tests with McLaren. although he recalled it wasn't anything special, just systems testing. Gareth then had a few seasons in Formula 3000, which at the time was a support race to European Grand Prixs' and was one step below F1. He can sometimes be heard on Eurosport commenting on various motor races!
