Before Pembrey came on stream as a racing circuit, Castle Combe, in Wiltshire, was the hub of activity for Welsh racers, with strong support in the circuits own Formula Ford 1600 and the Special Saloon Car Championships.
1983 David Llewellyn from Fochriw near Bargoed finishes as top Welsh driver in 2nd place, and wins Castle Combe Driver of the Year Award!

In 1989 David Davies from Bridgend was unable to make it 3 in 4 years, when he was involved in a Ist lap crash with a driver who had never raced in the championship before, handing the title to Davies' chief rival! David_Davies_1989_Castle Combe_woe!
Unfortunately Davies had what is know as a 'red mist moment' with the other driver and as a result had his racing license taken away!
This was unfortunate as Davies was an excellent driver, as he proved when he made a short comeback in saloon racing many years later.
