WRDA Welsh Young Driver of the Year
As well as the Welsh Saloon & Sports Car Championship
awards the club inaugurated a new award to honour the efforts of a
new bred of young drivers who are setting the tracks alight
escpecially in single seater racing. The new award, called the
WRDAWelsh Young Driver of the Year Award
was given to Hywell Lloyd for his efforts in 2007 (WRDA
Chairman Mike Woods presents Hywel with his award.)
Hywel won both the BARC Renault Championship and the Winter Series
in 2007. WRDA Chairman Mike Woods, who presented the award said "It
was a difficult decision as there are a lot of excellent young
drivers coming through, but winning two championships in a year
sealed it for Hywel. The trophy is dedicated to the men who carried
the Welsh Dragon into Formula 1.
Tom Pryce carried his on the back of his
helmet and Jack Lewis carried it on his car in 1962. Whilst Toms’ career
is well known, Jack Lewis is less well known but equally
interesting. He was the British Formula 2 Champion and entered
several Grand Prix in 1961 with a Cooper, qualifing well and scoring
points after taking an excellent 4th place in the Italian Grand Prix
at Monza. He took 3rd place in the Pau Grand Prix in 1962, and there
were plans to build his own car, but it was sadly shelved due to
lack of funds. In 1975 Tom won the Formula 1 Race of Champions at
Brands Hatch on the 13th March, which is almost 33 years ago to the
day, and then took pole & lead the British Grand Prix at Silverstone
the same year too. Apart from that he also took 2 podium positions
in his career. We hope it wont be too long before we have more Welsh
drivers showing their talents in a Grand Prix car, and this award is
to show how much we appreciate their efforts.Hywel himself was
delighted to receive the award saying "This means a lot to me, and I
hope I can do to it justice" Hywel was joined
on the day by his mother Rhian, his sister Eirian and her
husband Iwan.
Hywel's dad Harry missed the event as he was getting the car ready
for the next test, prior to the first race of the season at Oulton
Park
