Double chasing Hayes works hard to retain Sprint Title

Cool Hand Clive - reckons he has retained his title

WRDA member Clive Hayes from St Davids had his work cut out over the September 11/12th weekend, to score enough points to retain the Welsh Sprint & Hillclimb Championship, as engine problems hampered his challenge. With only 2 rounds left; on Saturday at Pembrey and Llandow on Sunday, Hayes was tied on points with Aberdares’ Chris Evans; but the engine in Hayes’ Rover began to rumble in practice for the penultimate round at Pembrey on Saturday, indicating damage to the engine bearings, and he was forced nurse the car around at a snails pace to pick up vital points for finishing. There was not enough time to repair the engine overnight and Hayes had to gamble that the engine would last through the Sunday event to keep his title ambitions alive. As it was, although Hayes made it around, the points remained tied and the title will have to decided on a tie break system, which takes into account the class wins through the season. Hayes said "I feel confident. I’ve done my sums and I reckon I’ve done it." The second leg of Hayes’ double Championship bid involves the Welsh Sports & Saloon Car Championship and the remaining rounds will be run at Pembrey on October 23/24, and only 3 points cover the top three places. Hayes said "I’ve got plenty of time to rebuild the engine and I reckon I’m in with a good chance of taking that title too" If he does, it will create a unique double and when added to Martin Davies triple Welsh titles it will mean that Pembrokeshire drivers would have taken more titles than drivers from any other part of the country.
