Jack Pryce visits Pembrey
"I am so glad that Tom is so well
remembered"
Kevin Clarke collects the Western Mail Tom
Pryce Memorial Trophy from Mr Jack Pryce
Jack Pryce, father of the legendary lost Welsh Grand Prix
racer Tom Pryce, who died in an accident not of his own making at the South African Grand
Prix in 1977, travelled to Pembrey on April 18th to present a trophy donated by the
Western Mail, named in remberance of his son. Just to show that Toms' appeal as a great
natural talent is not confined to Wales, the Eurocar circus was nominated as the first
recpient of the trophy, which was awarded to the winner of the V8 saloon car race. Kevin
Clarke who hails from the Midlands emerged as the victor after a clever pit stop stratergy
pit him into the lead, which he held on to as the race finished under a full course, no
overtaking caution. As he presented the trophy Mr Pryce thanked the organisers for
arranging his attendance and said "I am so glad that Tom is so well remembered
here"
As far as the writer is concerned, one day we all hope
someone will take up his mantle and put Wales back on the Formula One map, but it was nice
to be able to pay some small tribute to Tom. Many WRDA members have fond memories of his
exploits, and we all yearn to see someone pick up the baton again.
