EXCELLENT DOUBLE PODIUM FOR MORRIS IN RAIN-LASHED CZECH REPUBLIC by Marc Orme & Rob Allender
WRDA member Seb Morris climbed to 4th place in the 2014 Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup (NEC) after a wild & wet weeked at Autodromo Most in the Czech Republic over the weekend, 30th/31st August, with an excellent double podium in atrociously wet conditions. Two 3rd places finishes with the Fortec Motorsport run Tatuus chassis, means that Seb has closed the gap to the series leader, his Fortec team-mate Ben Barnicott, to 39 points, and is within 15 points of third place ahead of the final rounds of the campaign at the Nurburgring in Germany in three weeks. Sensational in the rain-affected qualifying session on Saturday, driver Seb secured pole position for round 12 with a lap of 1m48.754 seconds (139.427 km/h) to end the session a full half second clear of his closest challenger, but picked up a five place grid penalty for flag infringements – a result of terrible visibility in the spray. Starting in sixth place for the first of 3 scheduled races, Seb delivered an impressive drive, to carve his way back onto the podium, finishing in 3rd place only just 1.4 seconds shy of second position.

After increasingly heavy rainfall on Sunday morning, with puddles of standing water on the track, race 2 ( round 13 ) was postponed until the late afternoon with race three (round 14) not taking place at all and set to be re-scheduled to the final weekend of the season.

Starting race two from fourth on the grid, the action actually began behind the Safety Car after an initial delay due to the amount of spray on the track. When racing proper began Seb quickly made his move to take third place but the action fell under caution again soon after, limiting the amount of time available to make further inroads. Seb eventually ended the race 1.8 seconds shy of second.

“We had really good pace this weekend, especially qualifying on pole, so it was really unfortunate about the five place grid penalty. Without that I’m sure we would have won race one, but two podiums from two is good and I can’t complain about that. It’s a shame race three was postponed but they’re going to run it at the Nurburgring on the final weekend of the season, so hopefully we can get a decent haul of points there. We’re not out of it yet, there’s still plenty to play for.”
