Sebs' Sunday win outways Saturday woes! By Rob & Marion Allender
Formula Renault 2 litre Northen Eurpoean Cup at the Blancpain Endurance
Series Meeting Silverstone 23/244/25 May
Seb Morris driving in the 2014 Formula Renault NEC as part of
the Fortec team at Silverstone qualified on Friday in 5th place for the 3rd
round of the championship on Saturday! On a day that started with a cloud burst
in the Hangar Straight area, by the time Seb Morris took to the track for his
race on Saturday afternoon, the rest of the track was dry! After 2 green flag
laps, due to a stranded car, the race started with the recovery truck still on
track! Initially Morris settled into 5th place and was able
to maintain this although he was under intense pressure! However, having made a
gamble by running on used tyres so he could save a set of new tyres for Sundays’
Seb was unable to keep up the pace and lost 5th place, but even worse was to
come as he lost control and a spin dropped him down the order to finish 14th !
However although picking up only a few points, at least the car was undamaged
and with Seb starting from pole on Sunday on new tyres, the gamble might still
pay off!
On Sunday Morris, now on new tyres and with a few
overnight changes to the car, lead the entire Formula Renault NEC race from
start to finish. First he was challenged by his
teammate Ben Barnicoat, who eventually dropped away, to be replaced by Callam
O’Keeffe. O’Keeffe closed in quite dramatically but was never in a position to
mount a challenge and then dropped back to leave Seb to reel off the remaining
laps on route to his first win of the year! After an ecstatic victory
celebration with his family, and a full champagne shower from the top step of
the podium, Seb confirmed that he has a winners mentality! ‘I had a bad day
yesterday, but I’m glad I can leave that behind me and learn from my mistakes.
Today I just was able to concentrate on hitting my marks! I could see my times
in the car and I was keeping my lap speed at the right level. I knew Callum
would drop back in the later stages, and that’s what happened. I’m so pleased to
score some big points which should shoot me up the table to where I want to be!’
The current points scores
show Seb has moved up to 3rd place only 15 points behind the leader,
Dutch driver, Steijn Schothorst, & only 5 points behind Swiss driver Louis
Deletraz!
2014 2 litre Formula
Renault NEC points after 4 rounds
1st Steijn
Schothorst 72 points 2nd Louis Deletraz 62 points,
3rd Seb Morris 57 Points.
The next round is at Hockenheim in
Germany on June 15th.
Seb Morris, who is a part of the Caterham F1 teams Academy, is reunited with Fortec Motorsport for this season, having won races, and a championship with them in 2012. He is supported by Elite Cymru, Tag Heuer, Jack Wills clothing as well as Liberty Properties.
