Wrda member Andy
Meyrick, and the DeltaWing
team reaped the
rewards of months of
hard work as he led the
American Le Mans Series
(ALMS) race at Road
America in Wisconsin for
more than eight laps in
the revolutionary
DeltaWing Racing car,
until pitstop and
yellow flag dropped him
back to bring the car
home fifth overall and
3rd in class.
Meyrick’s British
team-mate Katherine
Legge started the race
in the rain, giving the
team the first chance to
race the car on the
Bridgestone wet tyres.
The car performed
incredibly, showing off
its straight-line speed
and strong grip and,
after a well-timed pit
stop, Meyrick took over
on lap 30 and was
leading the race.
However, the pace of the
championship-leading
Muscle Milk LMP1 car was
too much for the
DeltaWing charger and,
in the final laps of the
race, a ‘splash and
dash’ and an
unfortunately timed
yellow flag left the
team in fifth overall
and third in class.
“When we were behind the
wheel, we both had it in
our heads that the
Muscle Milk guys weren’t
going to get past!”
explains Meyrick. “We
both tried but they were
really quick in traffic.
It shows how far we’ve
come – who would have
thought we’d be battling
it out with Muscle Milk
so early into our
development season?!
We’ve worked hard on the
chassis; we really held
our own today.”
The 2013 season has seen
the DeltaWing Racing
team develop the
lightweight 1.9-litre
Elan-engined race car
with great pace, each
round delivering a car
that has improved
balance and speed.
Meyrick has been with
the team for the whole
of the season providing
consistent feedback and
regularly praising the
accomplishments of the
team.
“It was a phenomenal job
by the team," he said.
"What they have done to
improve this car in such
a short amount of time
really is no mean feat.
We’re happy with today’s
result but also a little
disappointed because I
think we could have
finished in second place
overall. But, to be
disappointed at not
finishing second shows
how this project is
moving forward.
“It’s a development
project and, along with
Élan Technologies and
Bridgestone, it’s been
incredibly successful so
far. I pushed so hard in
that stint, I couldn’t
push anymore. Katherine
did a great job at the
start – we’ve never run
in this car in the wet
and it’s a testament to
the team how well it
coped with conditions.”
Andy will next race the
DeltaWing at the Circuit
of the Americas in the
eighth round of the
championship. Follow his
