Meyrick enjoys “Best Stint” with DeltaWing at Lime Rock by Rebecca Jones

Wrda member Andy Meyrick praised the progress made by the DeltaWing Racing team after enjoying the distinctive racer's best performance to date in the opening stint of the Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park, Connecticut – the fourth round of the 2013 American Le Mans Series – where Meyrick and the team recorded a second consecutive podium result in the P1 class.

Having started from 12th position, the Chester driver battled past four rival cars on the opening lap alone. He picked off a further two cars during the remainder of his 80-minute stint to hand the DeltaWing over to team-mate Katherine Legge from sixth position.

The engine began to overheat during the second half of the race owing to exceptionally hot ambient temperatures, which forced the team to retire the car. Nonetheless, Meyrick was satisfied that he and the team had taken many positive steps.

“That was my best stint yet in the DeltaWing because of the progress made by the team,” said the 27-year-old. “Everything was better this weekend; the Bridgestone tyres, the Élan engine, the chassis. Every time we went out we were quicker.

“I got a really good start. I was quite aggressive in traffic for the first few laps. The car was mega through the traffic and we had great straight-line speed. We were lapping as quickly as the LMP2 cars. It was clear that we had made some improvements overnight and the DeltaWing was much more responsive.

“Obviously, with the issues we had later in the race, it’s disappointing. But to an extent, it’s to be expected – this car has never run here before, so the team was really thrown into the deep end. We said from the outset that this is a development programme and we are learning things we can take to the next circuits.

“Alan [Mugglestone] came in as the engineer and got his head around the car straight away. We can see the changes are working and for a driver, that’s really encouraging. The ending wasn’t great but the start was really strong.”

Meyrick will next be in action on Sunday, July 21st at the fifth round of the American Le Mans Series at the Mobil 1 Grand Prix of Mosport, Ontario. The 2hr 45min race starts at midday (EDT)
