Meyrick scores at the Rock, then gets taken out by
team-mate in race 2!
WRDA member Andy Meyrick
scored some welcome points in Round 8 of the Porsche
Carrera Cup GB but was side-lined in the 2nd of the
weekends races held at the impressively large, but generally
un-loved Rockingham Motor Speedway near Corby in
Northamptonshire. Meyrick has bizarrely found himself to be the oldest driver in the
championship at age 26! The Porsche Carrera GB Championship seems to be full of
the rough & tumble of motorsport, with some of Meyricks’ fellow competitors
guilty of some dubious driving tactics.
Andy has had prior experience at the
Rocks' 2 mile circuit
from his days in the British F3 International Series and he used
that to qualifying fifth for both of
the weekend’s . Driving
the Parker Motosports’ Lindberg car Andy approached the first
race with a determination to score points and avoid any trouble
and he raced well, showing real pace and finished 4th,
just a few tenths of a second away from a podium place.
After dry race in the
morning, race two was
held in driving rain and cooler temperatures which suited Andy
as he explained, “We
practiced in the wet on Friday and the car was blindingly fast
so I was feeling really confident when it started raining as I
knew we’d be right on the pace for the second race.
That made what happened on the first lap even more
frustrating.
Despite the fact that we hadn’t run the rain since Friday, one
of my Team Parker Racing team mates, Dan Lloyd, decided to not
only go for a narrow gap between two cars in awful, awful
conditions, but he also braked 50 metres later than anyone else
into the first corner.
He locked up all his wheels and skidded into me which
punctured both of the left side tyres on my Porsche and took me
out of the race on the spot.
To be honest, I think he needs a pair of LINDBERG’S
glasses!
“It wasn’t a great way to
finish the weekend, but I’m still really positive about the
weekend as a whole and how it all went until that first corner.
I felt more at home in the Porsche this weekend and the
pace is now there, as well as consistency.
Fourth in Race 1 was a good strong result for this
championship and I’m really looking forward to Silverstone."
