Andy powers the Team AMR Spice SE89C-002 to victory at Portimao 2011

WRDA member Andy Meyrick enjoyed a double celebration last weekend on the first of a busy few weekends of racing.  Driving a 1989 Group C2 Spice, together with his dad Peter, the father & son duo won C2 class of the final round of the Historic Group C Racing series during the Algarve Historic Festival at Portimao in Portugal and wrapped up the championship for the family team at the same time.  The Meyricks have taken class victories at four of the six races in the 2011 season and have been on the podium five times.

This is the first full season that Peter and Andy have raced together, and Andy has balanced the historic events with his commitments to Aston Martin Racing’s LMP1 and GT programmes and feels he’s greatly benefited from the experiences.   “This was our first year racing the Spice,” said Andy, “and I’ve been really impressed with its outright pace and performance, especially compared with the biggerC1 cars and we’ve been able to challenge them for the overall lead on numerous occasions.  There are some very good drivers in the championship and I think we’ve done really well against them all, with good overall pace throughout the year.  It was a great team effort and I like to think I’ve brought some of the experiences I’ve had with Aston Martin Racing to the organisation and running of Team AMR.  It’s very cool to win a championship with my dad, and I’m really proud of what we’ve achieved this year.”

Andy wont have much time to bask in the glory as he will be racing this weekend in the second of the VLN Championship races with Aston Martin at the Nürburgring required to qualify him for the 2012 Nürburgring 24 Hours.

After that he heads to China for the final round of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup with the Aston Martin Racing team.  Andy will be driving a Lola Aston Martin V12 Coupe with Stefan Mücke and Harold Primat in the 6 Hours of Zhuhai and the trio will be hoping to improve upon the podium finish secured by the team at the penultimate round of the series at Road Atlanta at the beginning of October.
