2008 Welsh Sports & Saloon Car Championship |
June thoughts from Alan Jenkins, Rhodri, Philip Bendall & Ken Davies
Hi All, Trust you all had a very enjoyable weekend, The weather was kind and the BRSCC even kinder giving us all that track time. Unfortunately it was marred By Ken's off but I hear he has been released and seems to be ok, we all wish him well. More news soon, Alan
I though Id add some spectators
comments to Robs race reports from the weekend.
First, what an achievement! Did you know that 29 cars (yes 29!) entered for the weekend.
We lost a few in the week leading up to the Championship because of car gremlins and
moving pavements causing broken wrists(!!!), but if you look at the results no fewer than
25 cars raced in at least 1 of the 4 Welsh races over the weekend. And the good news is
that now that we are a saloon and road sports Championship with closer speed
differentials, we can have a grid of 32 cars rather than the old 26 at Pembrey. Lets
target September for the first 30+ grid in the Championships history!
And what about the racing? I can tell you that as a spectator it was terrific right
through the field. In the various races you had the tremendous sight of the ex-Touring
cars and of course Rhys in his Seat full on at the front, with a smattering of other cars
like Nigels Marcos, Chriss Ginetta and Martins Cosworth mixing it too.
And not just that, but behind you had the Hondas, Caterham type cars and Fords
in their own battles, (often with all of the battles joined together!), and behind that
yet more dicing with the up to 1600cc class. To add even more interest, when the faster
cars did eventually start lapping the slower cars, race craft really came into it
as the quick boys
found out. I particularly liked Rhyss comment to Mark Nicholson after one race
Mark had signalled Rhys past, but was wondering why Rhys hadnt blasted past
him. After the race Mark asked why, and Rhys said I was going as fast as I could
your car is a lot quicker than you think!! That made Mark happy, and just
shows that you have to really plan your overtaking for best advantage when there are that
many cars out on track, all of them really quick in their own classes, and all involved in
their own individual battles! I think the overall standard of driving throughout the
weekend was very high, with a few pure racing incidents just being unfortunate to happen
at the wrong place at the wrong time to cause a few red flags.
The comments from people I spoke to were resounding in their support of the new look
Championship. Oliver Reid, photographer and reporter for Autosport and Motorsport News,
thought it was great, and the commentary team were fulsome in their support of the new
regulations, as were the BRSCC team. And a final word must go to Championship Co-ordinator
Alan Jenkins, and that word is THANKS!!! As we all know, Alan is doing a magnificent,
tireless job in getting us all out on the grid. Keep it up, Alan! Regards Rhodri
From: Philip Bendall, Great
news about Ken; also could you pass on my thanks to all the WRDA guys for a friendly
welcome and all the help they gave me over the weekend. cheers Philip
Ken Davies. Thanks for update
on Ken's well-being Alan & good news, I throughly enjoyed my 3 races on Sunday and the
usual camaraderie of fellow WRDA racers. I hope that I didn't get in anyone's way whilst
being lapped and apologise if I did, after 5 laps I was watching mymirrors more than where
I was going! To the cars ye olde Porsche was able to race with, thanks for clean no
contact driving that I'maccustomed to with HSCC. Ciao, Ken
