Dedicated to Tom \n\t\t\t\tPryce the Welsh driver who inspired many with his exploits in F1 \n\t\t\t\tracing, but sadly died in the 1977 South African Grand Prix.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tom had a meteoric rise through the lower ranks and after a stellar drive in the F3 race at Monaco, secured a drive with the Shadow team. He was highly regarded and if he had lived would almost certainly been a F1 Champion. Even so he remains the only Welshman so far to win a FI race; The 1975 Brands Hatch Race of Champions<\/a>, a non-championship Formula One<\/a> race. The only Welshman so far to qualify in Pole Position for a Grand Prix, and the only Welshman so far to lead a Grand Prix, the 1975 British Grand Prix at Silverstone! He also scored two podium finishes and many other points during his short, but illustrious career!\u00a0 The memory of Tom Pryce & his exampl<\/a>e inspired the creation of the WRDA Young Welsh\u00a0 Driver of the Year Award <\/a> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\t\t\t\tIn 1973 Yellow Pages were the sponsors of a six-race \n\t\t\t\t“International” championship, in addition to which BP sponsored \n\t\t\t\tan 18-race national championship. Colin Vandervell and John \n\t\t\t\tNicholson contested the two series, with Vandervell taking the \n\t\t\t\tmore lucrative Yellow Pages title. Tom Pryce contested both \n\t\t\t\tchampionships and won three consecutive rounds in the BP series \n\t\t\t\tearly in the season (20 Apr 1973 > Snetterton<\/a><\/strong> (BP \n\t\t\t\tround 3) 23 Apr 1973 > Brands \n\t\t\t\tHatch<\/a><\/strong> (BP \n\t\t\t\tround 4) & 06 May 1973 > Mallory \n\t\t\t\tPark<\/a><\/strong> (BP \n\t\t\t\tround 5)  in the Royale RP12A but took the chance of a \n\t\t\t\tpromotion to the Rondel F2 team and was in F1 by the following \n\t\t\t\tseason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\tN<\/strong>.B \n\t\t\t\tRondel Racing<\/strong> was \n\t\t\t\ta British racing team that competed in the Formula \n\t\t\t\tTwo<\/a> series \n\t\t\t\tbetween 1971 and 1973. The team was founded by two ex-Brabham<\/a> mechanics Ron \n\t\t\t\tDennis<\/a> and \n\t\t\t\tNeil Trundle. Rondel won five European \n\t\t\t\tChampionship<\/a> races \n\t\t\t\tbefore being forced to close down in 1973 due to lack of funding \n\t\t\t\tfollowing the withdrawal of sponsor Motul<\/a>.\n\t\t\t\tFor the 1973 season, Rondel hired Ray Jessop to design \n\t\t\t\ttheir own car. The result was the Motul<\/a> M1 \n\t\t\t\twhich was named for the team’s sponsor. Rondel’s final victory \n\t\t\t\tcame at the Norisring where Tim Schenken won the race, with \n\t\t\t\tteam-mates Tom Pryce and Henri Pescarolo in second and third \n\t\t\t\tposition. The 1973 season saw a complicated points structure \n\t\t\t\tused, where races were divided into basic and complementary \n\t\t\t\traces with only a driver’s first result from complementary races \n\t\t\t\theld in the same country eligible for points. This meant Tom \n\t\t\t\tPryce was not awarded points for his second place finish at the \n\t\t\t\tNorisring, having competed in a previous complementary race in \n\t\t\t\tGermany at the Hockenheimring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\t\t\t\tAt end of 1973 season, Motul<\/a> withdrew \n\t\t\t\ttheir sponsorship due to financial difficulties caused by the 1973 \n\t\t\t\toil crisis<\/a> forcing \n\t\t\t\tRondel to wind up operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tom Pryce or Mal\/Maldwyn as he was known by his family,  carried his\n\ndragon on the back of his helmet. His early career is peppered with championships but it\n\nwas how he drove, rather than what he won, that marked him out. Quite a few people saw Tom\n\nrace. 16\/3\/1975 is the anniversary of his win in the 1975 Race of Championship Brands\n\nHatch, also taking pole & fastest lap. That was when it was a proper F1 race.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

WRDA Secretary Robert Allender recalls “Tom was the only driver I ever saw\n\nwho could make slick tyres squeal! Eddie Jordan later said the same of Michael Schumacher,\n\nso Toms’ driving was streets ahead of his time” Tracks at that time had become safer but some, like the Nurburing, the original\n\nOsterreichring in Austria, Silverstone, & Brands Hatch, were still major challenge to\n\na driver. Also there were no pits stops for fuel or tyres. So the drivers needed to pace\n\nthemselves as a grand prix could last up to 2 hours.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later in 1975 Tom took Pole Position for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone\n\nand had 2 laps in the lead in the rain on slick tyres, until he crashed after a heavy rain\n\nshower. Just to put that into context 15 other drivers crashed \u2013 12 on one lap \u2013\n\nonly 4 cars were still running when they red flagged the race.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He then finished 3rd<\/sup> in Austria held on the original\n\n  daunting Osterreichring, in another rain hit race after starting 15th<\/sup> \n!\n\nHe was closing on James Hunt, who later admitted he was going to pit on the next lap for\n\nfresh tyres, and Vittorio Brambilla, who was leading, when they ended the race at half\n\ndistance. Brambilla crashed as soon as he passed the Flag! So that was definitely a race\n\nhe could have won. However in the dry he was 3rd<\/sup> in Brazilian in 1976 behind\n\nNiki Lauda and Patrick Depailler, just to prove that wet weather racing wasnt all he could\n\ndo. Later that same year in the classic Japanese Grand Prix that saw James Hunt crowned as\n\nWorld Champion after Niki Lauda pulled out, Tom was again closing on James just as Hunt was\n\ngoing to pit for fresh tyres, when the engine in Toms Shadow blew up, with the race at his\n\nmercy! <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
